2.0, in 2018 took the title of an Indian film with the biggest production budget. A Sci-Fi film, written and directed by S Shankar and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah, founder of Lyca Productions was also shot for 3D viewing. 2.0 was the sequel to the 2010 Tamil film Enthiran, which starred both Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajinikanth along with Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson. With a whopping budget of Rs. 450 crores, the film was shot simultaneously in both Tamil and Hindi.

2. Thugs of Hindustan

Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya

Budget: Rs. 210 crores
An action drama, Thugs Of Hindostan starred the likes of Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan, and Fatima Sana Sheikh. The film's plotline was based on Philip Meadows Taylor's 1839 novel, Confessions Of A Thug. The film was also a period drama set between the years 1790 and 1805. Unfortunately, it did not do very well at the box office.

3. Tiger Zinda hai

Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

Budget: Rs. 210 crores
An action drama, Tiger Zinda Hai was written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The film was produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films and starred Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sajjad Delfrooz. The film was a sequel to the 2012 film, Ek Tha Tiger. It did well at the box-office as expected and was definitely a calculated risk that proved to be successful.

4. Padmavaat 

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Budget: Rs. 215 crores
Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sudhanshu Vats, and Ajit Andhare, Padmaavat was based on the poem, Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. In the story of Rani Padmavati, felt sacrificing her life was better than surrendering to the enemy. For a period drama, the film is filled with breath-taking visuals, and costumes and sets reminiscent of the era. The film has also used IMAX technology and 3D, to give depth and added to its grandeur. The film was quick to recover its whopping budget and even went ahead to cross over Rs. 565 crores worldwide.

5. Prem Ratan dhan payo

Director: Sooraj Barjatiya

Budget: Rs. 180 crores
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was directed by Sooraj Barjatiya and was produced under the banner of Rajshri Productions. Starring Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor, the film emerged as one of the top-grossing films of Bollywood with earnings crossing over Rs. 400 crores worldwide. The film was apparently 'inspired' by the South Korean film, Masquerade, which too was loosely based on the novel The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope.
